GDIC Main Activities
1. The media-monitoring database
Since 1996, the Center has monitored about 26.545 articles on gender and children issues from Albanian newspapers. The information monitored in these daily newspapers is based upon a number of keywords, which are:
Women in social life: domestic violence, violence against women, prostitution, divorce etc.
Women in public live: government, parliaments, politic, health, sport, media, local government, electoral camping, and women in decision-making etc.
Women and Economy: business, employment, unemployment, discrimination in the work place, poverty etc.
Children: abused children, education, health, children and media, lost children, teenagers etc.
Gender Alliance for Development Center is yearly subscribed to various Albanian and foreign magazines which address social problems in general and gender issues in particular. All these magazines and newsletters are categorized according to the type and language. They are accessible to the public only within the library of the center.
2. The monthly reports through the e-mail list
On the basis of data earned from this daily periodical monitoring, the Center has prepared brief reports of statistical nature, that point out problems and different issues of concern to the Albanian society and the ways in which the Albanian media presents these issues. These mini-reports were disseminated by mail to different organizations in Albania, media representatives, women’s NPOs, or researchers interested in gender issues.
There are currently a hundred e-mail addresses which receive continuously the latest news and the most updated information that Gender-Oriented Documentation and Information Center constantly provides. Analysts, media representatives, students, university professors and teachers, women’s NPO-s and researchers interested on gender and women issues, continuously benefited from this service during the years.
3. Book collection and the database for book titles
The book collection contains more than 2614 book titles. The collection is partially created based on donations that Gender Alliance for Development Center has received in support of the project “Documentation and Information Center” (DIC) and partially through purchases made possible by funding in support of the project.
4. The database of surveys on women/gender issues in Albanian and English languages.
Part of the “Documentation and Information Center” is also a rich collection of studies, surveys and articles in Albanian and English that are related to topics such as: trafficking, reproductive health, legislation, domestic violence, child abuse, gender-based violence, gender-mainstreaming policies, gender-budgeting, women in decision-making etc. The existing collection is updated frequently with new researches, studies and surveys carried out by different local and international organizations, institutions, governmental instances, etc. There are currently 446 studies in Albanian and 302 studies in English in this collection.
5. The database of Women’s NPO-s and other organizations.
This database contains information about organizations, contact persons, activities and goals, projects, and publications of different organizations. The database is updated continuously through the electronic mail and direct contact with different organizations in Tirana and the districts.
There are currently:
- 145 contacts of NPO’s, institutions and donors that work with women in different districts of Albania.
- 148 contacts of NPO’s institutions and donors that work with children in different districts of Albania.
- 110 contacts of different NPO’s that work in different fields in Albania.
- 80 contacts of women’s NPO in Kosovo.
- 12 women forums near Political Parties.
6. The database on gender trainings, trainers/experts and trainees.
The database on gender trainings, trainers/experts offers information to all individuals and organizations interested in gender issues. It includes information about the experts, their professional training, curricula, as well as their contact information.
At present, there are 85 trainers/experts on gender issues, 765 trainings sessions and 2560 trainees. At the same time, as in every other activity of the DIC, renovation is always an inherent part. It is worth mentioning that the database on trainers is continuously updated.
7. GADC’s web page
As a specific activity of the Gender-Oriented Documentation and Information Center is the updating and maintenance of Gender Alliance for Development Center’s web page. In www.gadc-al.org there exists information on the history, activities, projects, publications, donors of the center. The web page was updated and extended with new information on the center projects, activities, reports and publications, which are available and can be downloaded via Internet.
The web page now offers the latest news on the activities and projects of the Gender Alliance for Development Center, as well as its recent publications, which are available in a PDF format.
8. The video cassette and CD’s collection
The Gender–oriented Documentation and Information Center owns also a collection of videotapes on gender issues, including movies and documentaries. These tapes can be borrowed and returned within a week. There exist a total of 142 videos and CD-s. They are used for different training and seminars that the center and the gender experts conduct throughout the year.
9. The Collection on Gender Statistics Publication
This collection includes all available official national statistics related to gender, provided from the Statistical Yearbook published by INSTAT – the National Institute of Statistics and other official sources. Data on population, employment, education, pensions, salaries, marriage and divorce, birthrates, and mortality, as well as the rate of participation of women in decision-making are available. This information is continuously updated according to the latest publications of our collaborators, like: INSTAT, FSHSHC (Faculty of Social Sciences, Tirana), National Institute of Insurance, Albanian Committee for Equal Opportunities etc. A total of 67 Gender Statistics publications are to the existing collection (in Albanian and English).
